Mary Etta (Mae) Jones-Alton 1898-1951

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=111759398

Hard to believe that the grandchildren of this Lady had no idea what she looked like because she had passed away when they were just less than 5 years old. Photo`s were not taken too often because of the cost of them and few people had camera`s.

How this photo came to our possession, it was in a shoebox of Family photo`s that belonged to her husband and this man was their Grandfather. When the Gandfather passed away all of his personal belongings went to their Father and when he passed it came to his daughter. The shoebox of photo`s and Family bible where in a filing cabinet for a number of years, until I started looking at them.

The search for whom this women has taken several years of research and questions to as many people that were related. Most of it was found through Ancestry network and Latter Day network. It was casting a stone into a pond and the ripple effect was how this unfolded.

WHY WEAR A POPPY?

"Please wear a poppy", the lady said,

And held one forth, but I shook my head

Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there,

And her face was old and lined with care;

"But beneath the scars the years had made

There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,

Bouncing along on carefree feet.

"His smile was full of joy and fun,

"Lady" said he, "may I have one?"

When she pinned it on, he turned to say:

"Why do we wear a poppy to-day ?"

"The lady smiled in her wistful way,

And answered: "This is Remembrance Day,

"And the poppy there is a symbol for

The gallant men who died in the war. "

"And because they did, you and I are free;

That's why we wear a poppy you see.

I had a boy about your size,

With golden hair and big blue eyes.

"He loved to play and jump and shout,

Free as a bird, he would race about .

As the years went by, he learned and grew,

And became a man - as you will too. "

"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,

But he'd seemed with us such a little while

When war broke out and he went away.

I still remember his face that day.

"When he smiled at me and said good-bye.

'I'll be back soon, Mum, so please don't cry.'

But the war went on and he had to stay

And all l could do was wait and pray.

"His letters told us of the awful fight

,(I can see it in my dreams at night),

With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,

And the mines and the bullets, the bombs and the fire."

"That sure did sound like an awful fight,

But your son - did he come back alright?"

A tear rolled down each faded cheek;

She shook her head but didn't speak .

"I slunk away in a sort of shame,

And if you were with me, you'd have done the same;

For our thanks, in giving is aft delayed,

Though our freedom was bought - and thousands paid !

"And so, when we see a poppy worn,

Let us reflect on the burden borne

By those who gave their very all

When asked to answer their country's call

That we at home in peace might live.

Then wear a poppy ! - and give !

Please wear a poppy, it says: “Well done.”

Why Wear A Poppy by Don Crawford

Handwritten in pencil, and on two sheets of foolscap, Don Crawford turned this poem in to the, The Perth Courier one morning in the early 1960s, where it first saw print a few days later.

For the next several years, and by means unknown, “Why Wear A Poppy” appeared in nearly every weekly newspaper and magazine, including LEGION, in Canada at Remembrance time, as well as foreign publications like Australia’s Anzac Appeal and Scotland’s Claymore magazine, copies of the same being sent to him.

Some years ago, Dominion Command of The Royal Canadian Legion, produced it on slides and tape for television and radio. Schools have used it extensively for their Remembrance programs.

Donald J. Crawford died in hospital at Perth on Saturday, October 7, 2000.

Summer Adventures in the Hood.

Its been a while since the last episode of neighbor hood kids getting mean with each other and now that school is out that changes the dynamics a little bit. This kids now need to find more things to do that are constructive because the destructive is already in play. If one doesn’t think of it the other surely does.

The few that are sent to day camps are well cared for and if they all play together things work well or otherwise they get sent home early. If they continue to act out enough they get uninvited for the rest of the camp and become a pest at home.

Well, there are two little guys, well 11 and 12 yrs old isn’t little, but the brain power sure is. They were caught doing damage to properties and taking turns in out doing each other in their challenges. The last straw was a assault on two smaller kids with threats and actually knocking them off their bikes.

The parents were quick to fix things but the promise of “law enforcement action” was loudly stated and implied to each of the boys. Only one was given his just desserts and the other got away scott free. And to keep them apart is going to be a chore since both seem to ignore our instructions in this manner.

The scott free kid has no discipline at home or suffers no consequences, so he is disadvantaged by his parent whom can’t do anything with him, he also swears enough to make me blush and at times its directed at adults. Old school, would be the “wood shed”, should we be bringing these buildings back??.

So, if they (parents) call the police, it will be outta of our hands and then its off to the “juvenile hall” to let them deal with it. I prefer to send both of them to a “friendly boot camp” where you work to eat and you eat to work for a time until you understand you are a nasty and need to pull up your socks. Some where in this place you have to shovel “horse shit”, exercise, leadership and education is provided. FREE!!.

There is nothing like mucking out a stall, you throw your weight in horse shit all day. And guess what tomorrow you get to do this again. You start to get an appreciation of nature at work. How can a horse produce so much shit and he doesn’t really do anything in return.??, by now the reality is sinking in.!!

At the moment our society is leery on doing this because of the age of the kids and other problems on being inclusive or exclusive. You can’t be sugar coating this, “they are little criminals ” unless you intervene you have failed your child and yourself. Little Johnny “ain’t cute anymore”. But, in real life this corrective society exists and it does help the ones that want to free themselves of self destructive behaviors.

Tough love is ok folks, somebody benefits, remember its for their good. Beat your chest and cry, but please get over it. Funny thing is; behind our backs the kids play together and have fun and the parents are still pissed off about it, but its not clear why or at whom???. That is really extraordinary.

So, this begs the question, whom is the fool here.??

Women are in charge, not a question, but a statement !

Hi Joe;

Its sure is another hot one in the country today and tell you what I am outstanding in my field. Not, real good at what I do but, I am outside standing in the field, while the women folk are inside.

I don’t want to complain about this arrangement but sometimes it don’t seem fair and I mentioned that fact to the misses. Well, she says you know you are right, so, lets sit down and talk about it.

She says we both get up at the same time and she lists off she has to do before the kids get on the bus. So, far all I have to do is go to bathroom and have a coffee and sit down and try to wake up. I, mentioned I would like to help with some of those chores.?

Well, help I, did do, was not up to equality of the misses and she said I move too slow. I said I had all day to work and do stuff, so what’s the hurry?. Well, that maybe so, but the kids have to leave in an ½ hour, so move it!!!. I, tried to do as she asked and then I was asked to sit down and get outta the way.??.

So, I tried this for the next hour and you know she left me outstanding in the field where I started from. So, I decided its fair that she be inside and I can manage outside, only I am going to move a little quicker so I can have a break on time.

The critters all seem to be fine with my time schedule and as far as I know none of then were complaining. So, if they were, it just sounded like they were saying hello and hurry up with food. I, think I will get one of the kids to help me, might go quicker.

Because, they have the same problem as I do, we are in the way and we are asked to get outta of the kitchen. When she gets rolling in there its like a “flying ninja with the Ganske razor-sharp knifes” making up stir fried sushi and egg omelets and I don’t know where the extra arms come from either.

So, yes if you are in the way you might end up as part of the main course or become slightly injured with a wallop up side of your head. Boys, come with your poppa, its safer over here and we can finish the chores too.

Well, looks like its time for some breakfast, and its only 6:45 a.m., so Joe how’s your day??.

Write to you all later, say hi to your misses.

Play Russian Roulette if you want to, but I'm done with buying foreign....

A friend sent this too me and asked to share.!

This is not only to save Canadian jobs it is to save ourselves and our nation as a whole from illness. Foreign production lines are not kept up to the same high standards we have here in Canadian and are far from clean.

Not to mention the horrible state of overseas water supplies. Don't they say when overseas or on vacation always drink bottled water? How do you really know the water used in most imported canned edibles is clean? You don't! Scary thought isn't it?

We had better get on the wagon and start reading labels. Not only do we already send enough money overseas as charity but do we really need to be sending more of our hard earned money when buying something that could possibly cause mass sickness across our beloved family, friends and countryside???? Think about it!

Play Russian Roulette if you want to, but I'm done with buying foreign....

This is TRULY worth reading and considering.....

All pickles with the Presidents Choice label and the No Name yellow label [Superstore] are made in India. Think about it, water from the Ganges River is used. Tell me if you think this sounds like a clean enough river!

The Ganges River and basin is the most heavily populated river basin in the world, with over 400 million people and a population density of about 1,000 inhabitants per square mile (390 /km2).

Exactly what I thought you would say!

Made in Canada

A physics teacher in high school, once told the students:

That while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't

Slow a train very much, a billion of them would.

So, keep that thought in mind, read the following, obviously Written by a patriotic Canadian:

Shopping in Lowe's the other day for some reason and just for the fun of it I was looking at the garden

hose attachments,They were all made in China . The next day I was in Home Hardware and just for the fun of it I checked the hose attachments there.

They were made in Canada!

Start looking........

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job.

A quote from a consumer: ...my grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked

made in Mexico now, instead of Smiths Falls , Ontario . I do not buy it any more.

My favourite toothpaste, Colgate, is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest.

You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Wal-Mart. I needed 60W light bulbs. I was in the light bulb

aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off-brand labeled, "Everyday Value". I picked up both

types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money

than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most

was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get

ready for this - Canada at a company in Ontario .

Their Equate Products are also made in Canada , and are very good.

Just to add my own experience on buying Made In Canada , I was looking for canned mushrooms

that were made in Canada and could never find any, so I would buy fresh.

But recently I found Ravine mushrooms - made in Canada with a little red maple leaf on the can. A

little more money but when I opened the can I looked at mushrooms that look

like real mushrooms, not a mushroom that looks like it was cleaned in bleach.

Another product I no longer buy is Del Monte or Dole canned fruit. Del Monte is packaged in

Taiwan and Dole is now a product of China .

Why should we pay for their fruit when our growers are left with fruit rotting on the trees. E.D.

Smith is still made in Canada .... buy theirs, at least you will know

what is in it and have some quality control.

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here .

My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made In Canada .

The job you save may be your own or your

neighbor’s'! (Your children & grandchildren, also.)

If you accept this challenge, pass it on to others in your address book so we can all start

buying Canadian, one light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies!

(We should have awakened two decades ago.)

Let's get with the program. Help our fellow Canadians keep their jobs and create more jobs here in Canada .

If President Obama insists on a 'Made in America ' Policy, which is commendable of him, to

support American workers, we should do likewise.

Read the labels. Support Canadian jobs.

BUY CANADIAN !

Growing older, is not the same, as been mature.

As we have aged or moved along with life, certain things begin to occur that also occurred to our parents. Being, young, we never noticed it, but as we take their place, guess what, I now notice.

My favorite is; what I did all night, takes all night to do.

I, have some aches and pains, more persistent than before.

I, find I feel young, but my body disagrees.

I, find I look young and people ask, hum…..just how old are you?.

I, don’t like certain foods any more or there smells.

I, not as able to stay awake with dreary company, Mr. Sand Man just sneaks up and poof, I be dozing.

I, find, when that same company doesn’t take a hint, I, leave, as in, “Oh, I hear my mom calling me”

I, speak my mind. Nothing intellectual, but they get the point. Yep, I see your position.!!

I, tell the kids the truth. !! It hurts me, more than it will hurt you. Somebody has to do it.

But, I can tell them how I lived as a kid, they won’t believe me. Walking to be schooled. Etc.

I, seem to get less pissed off for some reason. I, guess there is less to listen too or I have learned a lesson?.

I, find my buddies don’t drink like they used too, they drink tea or coffee???

I,find, I need to find some younger buddies that can ride a bike and party down.!!!!

I, find my buddies also have quit smoking.?? Even, the Woodford tobacco aka “arthritis medicine”.

I, find that my buddies look like old men, I wonder if I do when they see me.

I, find certain in-laws have a negative on my sense of HA HA. (and probably always did). And,if they don't like me now, guess what, they never did. And I hope your beer is piss warm too!!. No use calling them down unless a curse of misery is wished on them!!!.,an old custom from NOrleans.

I, find that the words of my parents filter into my conversations. (lots of truth).

I, find that going to the beer store is still an enjoyment, but somebody carries out the boxes.

I, find going to Liquor store.., is ok, and they ask, do you want carry out??.(cavemen hockey game).

I, find people will go door to door, with their kids selling stuff, but wait out in the street.???. Are you with your child or not, introduce your self, as I am liable to say no to a kid.!! I don’t want to do that??.!!!

I, find you support kids now, you will help them later to be their own inspirers and of other people.

I, find that at times my serenity is not as resolute as it should be. Gotta work on that.

I, find that the Doctor is a good person to listen too or else she will give a bunch of tests.!!!!!!!!!

I, find that the Doctor is the only person that listens about my cancer recovery.!!

I, find I enjoy going to the camper more often…………by myself. Kids, come on the weekends.

I, find that drinking a beer is more enjoyable with a another person,…..and some snacks.!!

I, find that I enjoy watching the BBQ shows on YouTube ,……well, don’t you???

I, find I am glad I can wake up at 6:00 in the morning and the cat and a kid is in bed with us.

I, find that waking up during the night to see why a kid is crying is a good thing.

I, find that I am glad about all lot of things, especially, that I can write this to share.

I,find I don't want to buy the matching hearing aids just yet, being a little deaf is a blessing.

If, you got this far, thank you, very much, I, assume, you have just as many or more to share.

The stairway to Heaven is at the end of the Rainbow??.
